INDIA
Later this week, a group of ten men and women from the United States and various points in Asia will meet in India to help distribute funds and relief packets there. This project has been proposed and developed by Pastor Daniel, who has been in close communication with ABWE since the earliest hours of this disaster and understands the situation there as only a local resident can. Rick Caynor, missionary appointee to Thailand, will lead the team and will provide frequent updates on their progress at cityonahill.abwe.org.
THAILAND
In Thailand, a joint multi-national relief effort with Thai Christian workers and Filipino missionary colleagues from the Philippine Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (PABWE) is already underway. The team is working with a church in Panga, a community which was devastated in the same way as the more highly-publicized Phuket. Read more.
Here at home, your generosity and compassion continue to be evident. Before we could even write and post much information on the ABWE website, many of you had already called and asked how you could be a part of our relief efforts. Thanks to your donations over New Year’s weekend alone, we were able to double our initial donation to the India relief effort.
LOOKING AHEAD
However, the bulk of the work still lies ahead of us. Please pray as we organize medical and rebuilding teams. After the initial stage of providing emergency food, shelter, and medical care, churches and homes will have to be rebuilt. The process will be long, but this is a crucial time to stand with our brothers and sisters in Asia. Thank you for your part in this effort.
You may contribute to ABWE’s Tsunami Relief Fund online or mail by designating your gift as “Tsunami Relief” and sending it to ABWE, PO Box 8585, Harrisburg, PA 17105 or ABWE CANADA, 980 Adelaide Street South, Suite 34, London, Ontario, N6E 1R3 Canada.. President Bush has signed legislation permitting those donating money for this purpose during January, 2005 to choose to deduct these gifts on their 2004 tax return. This does not apply to securities or other non-cash gifts, and your donation must be postmarked or posted to your charge account before midnight on January 31, 2005 to qualify. We will appropriately note the relief purpose on every such donation to assist in substantiating your gift should you wish to take advantage of this option. You do not need to notify us of your intent.
